Tanzania Methodist church was registered on 12th June 1991 and given a registration no. S0 N0.7500, under the ministry of Home affairs.

Due to its size, the church in Tanzania is divided administratively into Five Diocese under the oversight of an area Bishop, who is a leader

The role of the area Bishop is an organizational one created to help the diocese to operate more effectively.

In creating the role of the area bishop, the diocesan bishop granted certain Episcopal duties and authorities upon the area bishops that normally reside in the role and person of the diocesan bishop.

TMC comprises of 162 churches over 8,500 church members, with 36 pastors and 34 Evangelists and 6 Bishops and 7 missionaries in Tanzania

The headquarter of the church is situated at Msasani in Dar es Salaam opposite shoppers Plaza.

About The Founder

Bishop Dr. Matthew Peter Byamungu, a first presiding Bishop and founder of Tanzania Methodist Church was born in 1954,

he joined the Asian Center for Theological Studies and Mission in Korea where he received his first theology degree. It was there he met his wife Je-Young Ryu, who was his interpreter and Korean tutor.  In 1984, after graduation he returned to Tanzania with her and engaged in evangelizing in secondary schools and universities in Dar es Salaam.

From 1987-1989 he was a church pastor serving in Tabata and Mburahati and instituted the Calvary Cross Christian Centre Orphanage-Boko in Dar-Es-Salaam.  In 1991 he received a second theology degree from Hyup Sung University, and in 2009 he graduated from University of Latin California and honored with Ph.D in Divinity.

In 1991 he was appointed pastor of the Immanuel Methodist Church in Korea and was invited to attend the preaching work in Tanzania, the work he performed so effectively. He succeeded in registering the church in Tanzania, renaming the original Christian Methodist Church (TCMC) to Tanzania Methodist Church (TMC) and increasing the number of believers and Methodist churches in the short term.

In 2003 he was appointed the first bishop of the church in the country where he continued to serve until 2009 when he was appointed to be Presiding Bishop until his death.

Dr. Matthew Byamungu will continue to be honored by establishing the Methodist church in the country and developing its leadership.

He was an international preacher who preached in various parts of the world and was able to connect the church with various stakeholders, including governmental and religious institutions and non-religious organizations.

Dr. Matthew Byamugu is remembered as a humble, loving and cooperative leader for people of all ages. And passed away on 30 December 2017, following health complications. A burial ceremony was held on 4 January 2018 at Boko in Dar es salaam, Tanzania.

We believe in Jesus Christ, God the incarnate who became our teacher, our example, an atonement for our sins and our savior.

We believe in the Holy Spirit; the manifest of God with us, who is our leader, our comforter and our strength.

We believe in the Kingdom of God as a Community of mankind where the will of God is executed and in the brotherhood of all human beings before God the father.
